 The RANK-UP project aim is to design and chart a course giving Able Seafarer guidance and a direct passage to becoming an Officer-in-charge of a Navigational Watch

 


 The prime objective of the RANK-UP project is an innovative approach for ratings to upgrade their professional competence from Able Seafarer to Watch-keeping Officer. Existing professional competences will be assessed using ECVET (http://www.ecvet-projects.eu) elements and principles. A customised scheme of upgrading training, complemented by shipboard placements and distance learning will be designed to achieve the necessary competence upgrading. The rating will attain qualification at the STCW Convention Operational Level, as revised in 2010.

The training and certification programme for RANK-UP will be built up by transferable units of learning outcomes, which also recognise existing prior learning or qualifications the candidates have achieved.

Surpass

 The SURPASS automation training course has been designed to improve maritime training in the area of automated ship systems, with the ultimate aim of enhancing the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to work successfully with automated systems on board vessels.

Modern ships are becoming increasingly automated; conversely seafarers rarely understand the characteristics of automated systems and their weaknesses and limitations, which have been found to be a main cause of accidents and incidents.

SURPASS can increase operational efficiency through clear and comprehensive instruction in automation systems; by taking this course, you can award yourself greater responsibility while increasing safety on board, and be resassured that you are knowledgeable about such systems in the event of automation failure.

 The SURPASS course is now available in both online and PC formats, the latter for when there is no or little access to ship simulators or when Internet access is not available. The course is divided into two parts:

·         Instrumentation and Control System in Commercial Ships for Navigation Officers

·         Instrumentation and Control System in Commercial Ships for Engineering Officers

The course includes a number of chapters that are available for use in both classroom and online learning. The course includes a number of scenarios developed from real accidents reports/cases. Each scenario has a number of self-assessments exercises to support the learning process.

All of the above scenarios are available for both Navigation and Engineering Officers.

 SURPASS was presented at 1st International Mermaid Congress and this enabled the project to be disseminated at the Congress.

A paper was presented and published at HPAS 2010 Conference in Scotland  in June 2010

SURPASS was presented at 130 Year Jubliee of Maritime Education in Rauma with International guests in attendance in September 2010.

A paper was produced and published at International Conference IMLA 19 Opatija 2011 on September 2011.

Final Conference was held in Turkish Industrial Chamber in Turkey with over hundred individuals from representing various universities, companies, stakeholders attended the meeting across the world.

CAPTAINS

 The CAPTAINS product provides a number of Maritime English training solutions for seafarers. The courses contain animations, simulations and scenarios based on research into real life accidents, in order to improve seafarer’s proficiency in English. This includes an interactive 3D game set on the bridge of a ship, and a virtual environment that you can explore through an avatar.

The course materials and content are available free of charge as both an online and offline (standalone) course. The online course is supported by an e-learning platform, KWEBO, which facilitates collaborative and communicative learning between learners. The CAPTAINS e-learning platform and online coursed can be found at the CAPTAINS website http://www.captains.pro.

A downloadable version of the CAPTAINS course (standalone version) is also available on the website. Once the software has been downloaded to your computer, you can then study without the need for an internet connection.

M’aider

M’aider (Maritime Aids’ Development for Emergency Responses)

When accidents are analysed in depth, it can be clearly seen that the development of a training programme for Deck Officers cannot be based upon theory alone; it requires a relevance to real life situations and scenarios, to better identify key areas of error and deficiencies that lead to accidents.

This is the strength of the M’aider product, which can make you, as a seafarer, directly responsible for greater safety at sea and on board any vessel on which you operate.

The M'aider course contains simulations of actual accidents, incidents and near-misses to enable training in the aforementioned aspects of seafaring. This better prepares crew members to deal with emergency situations and ultimately, improve safety at sea as.

The learning materials are provided through full-mission simulators in an e-learning environment.

M’aider has 10 scenarios which are available both in a full mission simulation and e-learning exercise. These include collisions, near miss and grounding scenarios. Users are able to watch the simulated scenario online and take the complementary tests: The details of the scenarios are as follows:
